Samarium Cobalt magnets
Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnets are a type of rare earth magnet made from an alloy of samarium and cobalt. They were developed in the early 1970s and are known for their exceptional magnetic strength and remarkable thermal stability. SmCo magnets can maintain their magnetism at higher temperatures than other types of magnets, such as neodymium magnets. These magnets are available in two main series, SmCo5 and Sm2Co17, each with differing magnetic strength and temperature resistance.
Samarium Cobalt magnets are highly resistant to corrosion, but they are also quite brittle and prone to chipping and cracking. Despite their higher cost and brittleness, their ability to perform in extreme temperatures and environments makes them ideal for applications in aerospace, military, and industrial sectors where performance under intense conditions is required. They are also used in specialized medical equipment, sensors, and high-end motors due to their reliable performance and minimal thermal demagnetization.
